Romania Customs and Traditions

A lot of European customs may on the surface appear the same but in fact there are subtle difference which must be considered and remember to avoid any unnecessary embarrassment or offence. Initial meetings are very formal and will involve a handshake, direct eye contact and a suitable salutation for the time of day. Some Romanian men will kiss a women’s hand upon meeting, this is however not a suggested act for foreign men to initiate.

Close friends will tend to hug and kiss when they meet up. It is worth noting that kissing is done twice once on each cheek and begins with the left. Never take the initiative on this front though, allow the Romanian decided when your relationship has reached that level. Always use a person’s proper title and surname in greetings, friends may use the title and first name, but only close friends call each other by first names only.

If a Romanian invites you to their house there are some customs you should remember. Firstly always bring flowers, chocolates or imported liquor. Flowers should be given in odd numbers only, as even is used for funerals, and both Roses and Carnations are a good choice.
