Hungary is a landlocked state with many neighbors Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia and Austria. It is generally flat, with low mountains in the north. Lake Balaton, a favored visitor centre, is the biggest lake in central Europe. The predecessors of ethnic Hungarians were the Magyar tribes, who moved into the Carpathian Basin in 896. Hungary turned into a Christian dominion under St Stephen in the year one thousand.
